I brought home a cd Blackbook and find it to be noisy and hot. I have talked to a few apple people and asked whether this would be less of an issue in the cd2 since the chip should run cooler... One genius told me that both models have the same fans set the same way. Has anyone compared the fan noise/ heat issue on both models personally - ie. in a quiet room? Trying to decide which to buy for Xmas. Also, years ago Apple used to have a special Xmas eve sale if you ordered on the phone... Do they still? Insights appreciated...

I am pretty surprised that no one has compared these two...

I have the original 2GHz Core Duo MacBook with SuperDrive at home. The computer provided for me at work is the Core 2 Duo version of the same machine.

My home Core Duo machine does get hotter at times, but then I also work it harder and actually use it on my lap, in bed, whatever, with stuff like Aperture, while the work MacBook is almost always on a desk and just runs web browsers and mail clients mostly. Neither one has never become so hot that it worried or bothered me, though. From what I've experienced so far I don't see any significant difference between the two when used in comparable environments under comparable workload.

For what it's worth, I previously owned a 12", 1.33 GHz PowerBook G4 and I think in terms of heat my results were about the same. Its fan did come on on occasion, while I can't recall noticing that my MacBooks have ever had a fan come on to an audible level.

I've had both and I have to say, they're not the same.

While in appearance and speed they seem the same, the build quality and reliability of my Core 2 Duo feels leaps and bounds better than my original black MacBook. I feel much more comfortable with this new laptop than I did using my old one. My old one always seemed to have odd imperfections, mainly surrounding the display, keyboard, trackpad, and screen hinge but this one feels perfect. I had two different original macbooks.
