Okay, so last night, my Powerbook G4 15" HD started making nasty noises. So I took it to a genius bar and the guy said the drive was on its way out.

I'm a student with limited funds, and I am fairly technically competent, so is it worth it to pay the apple store $300+ to replace the drive for me, or should I find a drive that fits for $160 or so and put it in myself?

I don't have applecare, and my comp is already out of the warranty, so opening up my case doesn't void my warranty...

Heck no. Do it yourself. $300? That's way too much.

I agree it is only a 10 minute job, buy an external 80 GB USB for $80 and swap the drives. After you have cloned the drive format external and use it for storage it may not be going! That is the Genuis bars way of increasing sales! Check smart stutus often.

CompUSA will do the swap for $30, and they're an Apple Authorized Service place.

Needless to say, before you do anything else, you should back up the hard drive--before its too late.

The hard drive install in the 15 inch PB looks pretty straight forward. The ifixit guide shows how to do it.

BTW, I posted a thread a while ago asking for experiences with the tech service at CompUSA. Any updates to that thread would be useful for those considering using them for Mac service.

Okay, thanks for the advice guys, and thanks for the links.

I'll take a look at drives and see if the ifixit task looks too daunting...

The compUSA thing looks kinda dangerous to me...

Thanks again!

Did a drive replacement on my 15" PB, the smart status didn't give me any advanced warning that my drive was failing (don't rely on it alone)

The replacement is pretty straight forward, i bought a repair manual from powerbookmedic.com (which you can download), iFixIt.com would have been good too, but you have to be connected to the net to view their guide.

It took me about 1.5 hours, you have to be careful with all the screws that you take out and make sure they get back in the same place...what I did was make a pic of the step i was doing and used double sticky tape to put the screw i just took out on the pic where i took it out from.
