I want to play an avi file from my Powerbook on my new HD TV.
I know how to get the picture to play with the S-Video cable, but
can't figure how to get the sound out to the tv. I think I'm supposed to use
the headphone port, but don't undesrstand what kind of cable or what port to use on the tv
TIA!

You need a headphone jack to RCA audio adapter plus composite audio cables (traditionally red and white RCA). All easily found at Radio Shack. I don't recall if your machine has optical out or not, but if it does, and your TV has optical in, you can simply get an optical audio cable.

Thanks for the info,
So the headphone jack adapter goes into the headphone port on the computer which then goes into the RCA (red white), that then goes to the TV.
I'll give that a try.

Would this be something I could use?
RadioShack.com - Cables, Parts & Connectors: Connectors & connectivity: A/V connectors & adapters: RadioShack Gold Series 4-Piece Headphone Adapter Set
Thanks again.

No. You need headphone to RCA or composite. That kit is not correct.
