Well, if they don't show up on the desktop, what does happen? What are your CD and DVD preferences set to do in System Preferences?

Do they show up in your Finder sidebar?
What are your Finder prefs set to display on the Desktop and Sidebar? Look in both the General tab and the Sidebar tab.
