I purchased the new 15" intel mbp when it first came out last year and I have run into a few more problems than I expected. The first was when I updated the os to 10.xx, I think it was the first update for the intel os on the macbook. My computer locked and the only way to fix it after consulting apple support and trying everything I could was to reformat the drive. This was after I had made the mbp my work computer, so I lost a decent amount of time and work, very frustrating. And of course apple promptly blamed me for not backing up my work to an external drive, it's hard to dissagree with them about that. But, the computer was only two months old and it was recommended to me by apple at the time to update the os which turned out to be buggy and caused my computer to fail. I guess you can say we share the blame on this one but it was apple's bug that caused the problem.
Next, a few months later my computer died. It was a quick diagnosis that the battery was the culprit and apple was very good about sending out a replacement, although this was still my work computer at the time and I could not use it for four days. The latest problem, now just a couple months ago was the computer powering on cd/dvd drive whirs up light comes on but the computer never starts. After going through the normal diagnostic procedure I was told that it was most likely the logic board that had to be replaced. By this time I had the computer backed up to another drive and returned to working on my old dual 1.8 g5. Apple service was also prompt and helpful about this problem and sent me a box to ship the mbp to texas for repair. I was busy at the time and needed to remove the hardrive in my mbp before I sent it in so the computer just gathered dust. Since my workflow reverted back entirely to the old g5 I just put the mbp out of mind, I was tired of dealing with it and its problems. At this point I am not willing to start working on it again with the possibility of having to deal with yet another problem. I no longer trust this machine. My g5 just works. I've realized now that the most important feauture to have in a computer is that it work, everything else is secondary! A couple weeks ago I finally sent the computer in and apple currently has it. At this point though that computer is dead to me, I don't use it and I don't want to use it anymore and risk another time consuming headache inducing crash or hardware failure.
-Anyone else have a similar experience with first 15" version of the mbp?
I am now going to sell the beast and move on. Having a portable workstation was a luxury, I will most likely put the proceeds into the new octo core macpro and hang onto my trusty old g5 as permanent backup workstation. Does anyone have a ballpark on what I could ask for the mbp dual 2.0 ghz model with 100g 7200rpm drive, 2gig ram, 256mb video card? It's still under warranty of course. Any advice on disclosure of the problems this computer has been through? Should I list them in the ad or state them upon demand?
Any response or insight will be appreciated.
-Thanks
