im tryin to help a friend fix her powerbook g4, the problem is that once we turn it on it freezes with get a grey screen with a dark grey apple in the middle and a cursor just doing circles and it stays like that forever.. weve tried to even take it to apple store but all they were able to do was boot it up from their external harddrive..
once they would boot it up, the computer would act normal (even after he disconnected har drive), we would be able to use all the programs as if nothing ever happened.. but when we restart it, the freezin problem comes back (thats when we have him boot the computer back up with his hard drive just so we can use it)
i havent tried formatting yet, i want to first try and see if its fixable first

Boot holding down shift key.
Look under preferences for startup items and turn off all itmes.
Repair permissions.
Reboot, if problem persists, zap pram

Well if the Apple store could get it working, why don't you copy your data onto an external drive, and then format and reinstall? It sounds like a hard-drive fault if it can be booted from an external drive.

Holding shift key while starting stops loading programs at startup!
Try down loading and running AppleJack!

Hi Zaink, did you ever figure out what the problem was? I am having the same exact problem with my powerbook. I have been on the phone with Apple tech support, we've already repaired the permissions and reset the p-ram, still the same problem. I am going to try to take it to the apple store in the morning. I just hope they can get my data.
