Every so often, normally when I put my MacBook Pro (C2D 2.16) down on a desk and open it up, the hard drive (or at least, the left handrest area) beeps. The computer starts up fine, and I don't observe any other problems with it. What is this beep trying to tell me?

Check out the SMART status of the hard disk in Disk Utilty.
And make sure you have your data backed up (you do this anyway, right?)

The SMART status reads "Verified".
All of my data is backed up regularly, so I'd just lose the day or so of setting up the machine if it were to fail.

I get this chirping noise from my PowerBook G4 in the upper right hand corner. It's not my hard drive because that's located under the trackpad. It's been going on for almost a year ... I assume it's just age :-)

Considering this machine (MacBook Pro, current generation) is less than a few months old, hopefully it isn't an age problem...
I've come to the conclusion it's the sudden motion detector, although I haven't seen it documented anywhere that it beeps. I'll ask the next time I'm near an AppleStore to double-check, methinks.

I'm having the same problem. Upon opening my MacBook Pro and occasionally while using it--about once a minute sometimes--I hear a slight beep on the left side of the computer. My MBP is only a couple weeks old now, so this problem is really bugging me. I did download a game that took advantage of the Sudden Motion Detector, so that may have caused the problem. I've deleted it since. Does anyone know if there is some factory restart the SMD?
