I am planning to purchase a refurb 15inch core 2 MBP (2.16/1GB/128MB) on the Apple store today. Here are my two questions.

1) How likely is a refresh for the MBP at MWSF on the 9th?

2) VRAM - obviously 256MB would be preferred on the higher model, but is it worth $500?? Will there be a noticeable difference in applications like FCE or iPhoto that use core image/animation? Gaming is not really an issue since I use a DS/Wii/XB360 for that. I would rather save the money...

Thanks for your input

1) Unlikely. Last update was only 72 days ago (against and average of 143 days between upgrades) and Intel has a new (faster/better) chipset coming out in the Spring.

2) Probably not. But the $500 gets you a number of other upgrades too.

1) A refresh IMO is unlikely but we may get one or two new models, e.g. "MacBook Thin" and/or a 13" MBP. In any event waiting is a given, except that a MBP ordered today could be returned next week if necessary. I too am buying another MBP but for sure will wait to see what shakes out of Mac Expo.

2) The extra $500 gets you more RAM, faster CPU and VRAM; not just VRAM. IMO the biggest benefit of the added VRAM is for folks running an external display. My current plan is to buy the cheapest refurb MBP for my dad and add a 1-GB RAM DIMM taken from my C2D MBP, which is getting a 2 GB DIMM upgrade to 3 GB.
