I have a Pismo (config: 500 Mhz G4/1 GB DRAM/5400 80 GB Seagate HD/slot loading SuperDrive) running 10.4.8. Lately the machine has been acting quite quirky. When trying to wake it from sleep, the screen stays dark, the power LCD goes out, but the Mac is still powered up. Also it will stick indiscriminately if it is moved a certain way or lifted along the bottom and back side where the door for external hookups are located. Usually if I power it down by holding down the power button and start fresh or if I restart using the command-option-power button it will run again, but the problems tend to persist.

The HD was replaced in early fall '06 because the previous one (a Toshiba) broke down. The problems began within a couple months of replacing the drive.

What I've tried so far:
1) Disk Utility - checked HD and repaired permissions.
2) Zapped PRAM
3) Took out DIMM and reinserted it to "clean it out"
4) Swapped clock batteries with my other Pismo
5) Pushed the power reset button on the back of the Pismo per Apple's instructions

Yet to do:
1) Try a fresh clock battery
2) Reinstall Tiger
3) Back up HD, wipe it clean, start with fresh install of Tiger

Does this sound like a system problem or a hardware problem? I'm just looking for some possible solutions before I spend a bundle to get it fixed.

Thanks!!

I've taken apart many Macs in my day, but never a Pismo. How do you recommend I go about checking this?

It wouldn't surprise me if this is the case. This particular unit has been a road warrior from the word go. It originally belonged to a good friend and I bought it from him last year. Still in great shape after all this time and use.

these links indirectedly tell you to seat/press the mother board/processor. OWC used to have a hd installation for pismo movie they must have dicontinued it.
Essentially remove keyboard__ remove heat shield___ remove both memory module and then press hard on the mother board.

Mine is having the same symptoms. However, since it's far, far, from being an original machine (I've even replaced the fan with a Papst silent one - that took a bit of resoldering...), I'm cool(ish) with it. That's why I'm not going to upgrade the hard disk. Saving now for a Santa Rosa+Leopard MacbookPro!
My Mac is a Pismo G4/550: 1GB RAM, 40GB 5.4k, Airport, DVD-R, and still black, silent and curvaceous!
