I have the stock 512 in my mac book. And I'm interested in getting another stick so I can have 1 gig.

I use word a lot and even when I'm not I see the beach ball allll day long. Multi tasking is really a pain for me.

SO i was reading some people talking about how the macbook likes ram in pairs. What does this mean and what should i do if i want to upgrade to 1gig? (exactly what should i buy?)

Pairs means both modules are the same size (and speed/latency/etc). You have two 256MB modules right now, so if you want to upgrade to a gig you should buy two 512MB modules. I'd recommend going straight to two 1GB modules now, since you'll probably want it in the future.

Ok. So, buying two 512's, can the two 256's be removed? And are you sure that the ram in my book are 256 sticks and not a 512 stick?

I'm just wondering because I assumed that the stock ram could not be removed. Is this not true?

Have a look at this link it should help.A couple of points to remember use the correct size screwdriver, the screws on the plate covering the ram chips are easily damaged. Take your time, remember to ground yourself before working on your Macbook it eliminate any static. Hope this helps.

Not only can they be removed, they must be removed. The MacBook only has 2 memory slots.
Yes, Apple only sells the MacBook with matched pairs. Look in the system profiler to confirm this.

it's true, once you install the two 512, you'll end up with two bones in your hand (the 2x256)...
try selling them.
