My old hard drive on my G4 died a few months ago and I just bought a new 120gb Western Digital hard drive. I put it into the G4 and tried to install 10.2 but I couldn't find a destination drive. Then I tried to use my OS 9 cd and my drive won't even read it. So how can I format the new hard drive? Thanks in advance.

go to the menu bar, "utilities" and select Disk Utility. Select your new HD in the left pane, and click on "erase" then select the format "HFS+" and type in name for the drive, and go for it. Once the drive is formatted, you will be able to see it & select it in the installer menu........

Maybe I am missing a step or two but this is what I tried to do so far. Clicked on the Installer Tab then Open Disk Utility. I erased the hard drive and then I made two partitions. The second one I want to install linux later on. Then I erased the first partition. I clicked verify and it said that HFS was okay. So I go to install the OS and now it does see the hard drive but there is a red ! and I can't load the OS. I tried to use Mac OS extended, then Mac OS extended (journaled). Finally tried Unix but my Powerbook froze.

WTF!!! I just tried the process all over again and it's installing the OS. I don't get it but at least it's working now. Thanks for your help bowwowman.
