I just need some basic diagnosis help on our 800mhz G3 iBook. I used to be an Apple Service Technician, but that was 8 years ago.... Anyways, when you turn on the iBook it has several horizontal lines on the right side of the display. After about 30s it freezes.
My father dropped the laptop a couple years ago and slightly bent the hinge, so my first guess it that the hinge has been slowing wearing on the display cable. I took the laptop apart, and the bronze plastic stuff is worn all the way through. However, these cables are different from the old Powerbooks that I'm used to working on. The bronze plastic used to be a part of the electronics itself, but now it looks like it's used for insulation or protection. What is the purpose of the stuff? How can I definitively tell whether the cable itself is damaged or not?
Anyways, I reattached the cables and all electronics (but not the case), and powered it on. I can hear the laptop reach the login screen, however the display is completely blank now. I imagine that upon dissasembly the damage became complete. However, I tried to attach an external monitor and it gets no picture either. I can't remember... does the external display automatically come on, or do you have to set the resolution in the System Prefs first? Does the entire laptop have to be reassembled for the display to work (maybe there are grounds on the case)?
Thanks in advance!
