So I have read that utilizing an external sata will not allow me to make bootable backups, which as fine as long as it will allow folder synchronization, i.e. itunes folder 1 is different than itunes folder 2, so software compares them and makes them the same. Will this work? Much faster than firewire 400? I take a LOT of photos and also want to be able to transfer them to an external HD much faster...anythign I'm missing or is this just way faster by buying a mac compatibile expresscard and new FW HD case?

File transfers are fine once you're "inside" an OS (OSX or Windows).

Most current drives are able to read/write (~60-70Mbps) about twice as fast as the practical bandwidth of FW400 (~30MBps).

I love eSATA; AZIO makes a very nice eSATA+USB2 enclosure for $33 at NewEgg.

so I could use the USB 2.0 cable to make y bootable backups, and my e-sata to do any consistent backing up and synchronizing of files, folders, etc? So I could use 1 drive for both purposes? That would be great...

oh, and which card is recommended for the MBP or MB? I found 1 that appears to work for mac, but want to make sure I get one that is tested and works well with the OS. Thanks!

If Intel Macs can boot of USB, yes. I don't know that they can or can't. Here's the enclosure, available in black or silver.

The MB doesn't have an EC slot, so you're SOL there. As for the card, I'd go with whatever OWC has.
