I am considering a used MBP Core Duo 17", and was informed that these
first generations are a lot worse for heat than the newer "2" versions.

Any thoughts?

Could it be much worse than the PB 17" 1.33 I've had?

I know that it will be worse than your PowerBook. However, the 17" has more room to breathe than the 15"s do. But they still get pretty hot, its not really a laptop anymore. However these problems are worse when you are doing heavy CPU intesive tasks, which is usually done on a desk plugged in.

Additionally their are programs out now that will raise the idle fan speed so that the computer will stay cooler at the price of a little noise.

However, this is the end of the line for me cause I have a MBP CD.

My Core Duo MBP is not "too hot" for laptop use. It's certainly quite warm, but not really "hot" in the sense that it's uncomfortable to touch or anything. And since the bottom of the laptop is flat and hard and my lap is neither, I use my laptop sleeve as a lap cover when it's actually on my lap. No problems.

My PBG3 was the hottest laptop I have seen. My 17" C2D MBP and my dad's 15" C2D both run pretty cool, and I manage a 15" CD MBP that although hotter than the C2Ds is never (IMO) overly hot.

Max power max workflow laptops do typically run "hot" because they are engineered for maximum laptop performance. If someone really needs cooler temps they can turn down processor performance or run less demanding workflows.
