OK, All of a sudden my 12" powerbook's fan runs all the time & the CPU usage (according to Activity Monitor) is 100% all the time. If I did this right, I posted a pic of the CPU usage in this post. At first I thought it was because I had an external monitor plugged in, but I unplugged it & restarted & immediately the CPU usage went to 100%. This was before I opened a single program. Currently AM shows 100% CPU usag with between 90& 98% being "User" & the rest being System, but no nice or idle. When you look over the CPU usage charts that makes up the top of the AM panel, it shows Safari using somewhere between 10-15% of CPU, Activity Monitor using 3% & sometimes another one pops up that's using 1-2% of the CPU, but there is nothing else using any CPU.

This seems to have just started over this weekend & I've never had a problem in the past with fan noise/ CPU usage. The only thing I've done recently is install the recent DST software updates. Could this be causing my problems? Is 100% CPU usage damaging to the computer & if so, is there a way to stop it?

Thanks for any help you can offer. A quick search of the archives didn't being up any useful threads.

Any processes in the Activity Monitor showing that its using that 100% CPU usage or a huge chunk of it?

nano comes to mind, but if you dont use pico, then its probably not that.

Thanks for your help. I was going to say no, but as I relooked at everything, I was looking at User processes, once I clicked over onto all processes, I see that a print manager app was using 87% of the CPU. Once I force quit that, CPU usage is back to normal.

Thanks for your help.
