All of a sudden I get no sound whatsoever. The volume bar goes up down on and off, but nothing comes out!
System prefs recognizes a mini-jack for the stereo system, but doesn't produce sound there either...
Any ideas on this one? Never saw this before.....

Play around in Audio Midi Setup (Utilities > Audio Midi Setup) to make sure everything is configured correctly.
Other than that, restart, plugin and unplug stuff, try resetting pram. Run the Apple Hardware Test if all that fails. Just generally make sure no behind-the-scenes apps are doing something you're not aware of before you worry about a hardware failure. Could something be stuck in the headphone jack?

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.
It resets the speaker volume and startup speaker volume (among other things). Worth a try.

Nope, nothing works. Instead, I'm the lucky recipient of the error code : 21SS/1/5: OX39 in the hardware sweepstakes.
Now have to find out what that means. I'm getting an ohhh-so faint boot-tone, almost sounds like the lowest setting, but only when I boot.
Otherwise, nothing...Wonder if it's because I had it hooked up to my ALtec Laansing speakers for a week while my G5 was in the shop.
THis really, has been a horrible month for me and Mac.

Apple - Support - Discussions - No sound on internal speakers ...
I have a PB G4 12" 1.5GHz running OS 10.4.8 and the identical issue occured whereby after using headphones earlier in the day and shutting down PB only to reboot later in the day without headphones attached . NO SOUND! and no option in Sound Sys Pref for internal speakers only headphones. I first read all these posts in this and other forums and called Apple Tech support.
They had me do all that has been suggested here also with no luck. He then gave me a case # and said I had to take it in.
I hung up and wondered what would happen if I restarted off of my bootable external firewire drive (running MacOS 10.3.9).So I did and the PB speakers worked with itunes and youtube videos, the choice for internal speakers appeared as they should under Sound Output in the System pref.
I then restarted using the PB internal hard drive running
OS 10.4.8 and magically everything was back to normal!
Clear sound output from the internal speakers.
I hope this works for you also since it was so simple.
Good Luck.

2 things that I can't figure out....
-by moving the sound pref pane to the trash (but not emptying), the pref is never replaced. When opening the master prefs window, the sound is actually removed from the hardware row.
-I don't have the Tiger install disc set that is on the PB.. I got it off a guy from Craig's List, but have the Panther install discs from my previous PB. But I do have my G5 install discs that won't start the PB, I get the "cannot install software on this computer" message when booting the PB with those.
So can I make my PB boot with my G5??? Maybe via FW, what's the secret keyboard button for that, lol???

woah...you DONT want to trash the pref PANE; go to your home folder, to your library, to preferences, and trash this:
com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist

Well, I wish that was the answer but still no dice.
Is there even away to boot with another computer and try mystaas's idea?
I still get the ever-so-faintest boot hum when I restart. That's the only sound I can ever get out of it!
