I'm getting a 17" MacBook Pro on Tuesday, and I'm wondering if there's anything that would be really great to get for it. It supposedly is coming with a bag, so I probably won't need anything special to carry it to school in. Just want to know if there's anything really recommended for it.

I just read some horrible reviews on Apple's website. Is it really true that the Magsafe adaptors end up eating through their own shielding after months?

Ok, a lot of the articles seem to be at least a year old, but this has me genuinely freaked out. My family can't afford anything happening to our house because of a melting/burning adapter, and I won't be able to afford replacing this thing. Has Apple officially replied to this problem yet?

Yes.

Mine did exactly that. Apple shipped me a new one.

But no plans to retool them?

Seriously, I'm not going to want to leave this plugged in overnight to charge if there's that big of a chance of damage the next morning.

Well, what happened over time is that a short developed between all the little wires inside the white MagSafe cable where it meets the adapter brick. This was from the stress of being bent back and forth over the few months of being transported from home to work to school and back again.

If you're not moving the adapter around a lot, it should remain fine. I've now reinforced the problem area on my new adapter with some stiff electrical tape so as to prevent too much bending back and forth.

Well, I guess that's not too bad. It'll mostly only be plugged in when it's stationary and asleep at home when it needs a charge, since that's mostly what I did with my iBook. Though it'll be a bit odd to adjust to not wrapping the cord around the brick since I did that all the time with my iBook's cable (and it ran fine for 2 years). I'll just have to figure out a better way to store the cable to take to school with me if I need it.

And if worse comes to worse, I work at Radioshack and I'm sure we probably have something that could be used to add a little extra reinforcement.

You probably already know this, but it's worth repeating: Just because a bunch of people posted a review about a failed adapter doesn't mean that the problem is widespread. People are only going to say something if they have a problem. Don't just assume that your house is going to burn down if you buy a MacBook. Just use your common sense and take care of it. The warranty will take care of anything out of your control.

Yeah, I've calmed down a bit. I've just been stressed because of issues I just had with a Ti PowerBook I bought here a few weeks ago, so seeing those reviews kinda freaked me out a little. But I don't think I'll have to worry
