I am experiencing a peculiar problem with my 15" MBP that appeared right after buying it.

When trying to copy large (+1GB) files from external drives attached through USB 2.0, I frequently experience the MBP to freeze completely. The "Copying..." progress bar will stop at a certain percentage (always a different) and all I/O-activity on the external drive will cease.

It such a situation, the MBP freezes completely. The only way out is to press the power button for 4 seconds.

I can perfectly start files from the external discs or view films streaming from it, but copying is sometimes suicidal. It's absolutely non-reproducibly.

I have read several accounts of phenomena like this from UNIX machines but never from MBPs.

Does anyone have an idea what might be the problem?

Does this only happen with Finder copies or also when you use something like cp or ditto?

I have similar experience with all my Mac(osX) while tranfer file thru ethernet from other computer, the problem in my case is really not hardware, but rather osX do not quit gracefully when there is a error during transfer!
Do not settle for the world in shades of grey
