Hi guys,

My mac book pro has a couple of broken (for lack of a better term) tabs/arms on the Dimm carrier. These 'arms' are the ones in which the thin metal clips run parallel too, used to secure the dimm from angling up. It's difficult to describe unless you have peered at one and are familiar with them.

I noticed this the first time I added ram to the laptop - took it too Apple, they of course blame me, and want 1,100 for a new logic board. I took the laptop apart, ostensibly to see what I could do with the dimm carrier, and lo and behold, found the missing pieces inside!

Anyway, heres my question - I can glue these, but they are so small, you have to use an industrial glue/solvent designed for the particular plastic involved - otherwise it won't work. So I need to know what type of plastic/material these are made of. My brother works in such a place (they specialize in plastics), so I can have them glue the thing, but there are dozens and dozens of different kinds.
Apple store employes looked at me like I was from Mars, so no help.

Anyone? This might sound like a giant goose chase, but it sure is better than forking over 1,100 dollars for what should be repairable part.

Did you install your own RAM prior to spotting this fault? I would call Applecare and raise hell about it. If you can persuade them to issue a CS code any service provider will swap your board out for you for free.
As for the plastic used, I wish you luck. I know that if I asked Apple's service provider support team this question, they would stand over my email with those same blank looks you mention. You might be better off asking Foxconn or whoever makes these boards. Though they probably wouldn't be allowed to tell you.

Ask someone at Digikey, they might be able to provide an educated guess at least.

As the other poster said, I'd raise hell with AppleCare (and escalate from there if they're no help). Of course now that you've taken the thing apart, you'll have to be very careful putting it back together so you don't add signs that it has been tampered with.

Even without the clips, you may be fine... DDR2 DIMMs have very tight fits in their slots, and with the memory door closed it shouldn't be able to flop out.

I don't know exactly what plastic they're made of, but AVX and JAE are two big suppliers of memory slots.
