probably an impossible question to answer, but does anyone know if santa rosa macbooks will use the same ram as C2D macbooks?
i'm asking because i'm thinking of getting 2GB for my current macbook, but i will be trading up when santa rosa comes out (the more often i trade up the better - i have an arrangement with my work) and would like to be able to use the same ram in my next macbook, and sell my current one with the factory 512MB back in it, otherwise i'll have to purchase 2GB again for my next one...

any thoughts?

It should be noted that Santa Rosa can use 800 MHz RAM. Current MacBooks do not.

That said, 800 MHz SO-DIMMs don't seem to be that common in the mainstream yet and the stuff that is out is expensive, so who knows what the next MacBooks will use.

Personally, I'd just get the 2 GB DDR2-667 RAM. You could always just resell the RAM if necessary, or else sell the MacBook with the 2 GB. You'll get more for the MacBook with 2 GB RAM than with 512 MB obviously.

If you're adamant about future proofing yourself though, you could purchase DDR2-800 SODIMMs. That would work in current MacBooks, and probably in future ones too.

would the slots for those 800mhz so-dimms be backwards compatible with 667mhz DDR2 ram?

Isn't that simply because currently there is no need for them? When SR arrives people will get 800 MHz busses and start to buy 800 MHz spec'ed SO-DIMMs. Now, with just Napa running on a 667 MHz who really needs 800 MHz SO-DIMMs?

I agree though with going ahead and buying the 667 MHz DIMMs now. Resell later if you want.

Yes. All DDR2 SO-DIMMS have the same physical interface to the motherboard.
