My wifes iBook developed the dreaded mainboardfailure, where it won´t boot at all. Having accepted the fact that the iBook was now only usefull for spare parts i managed to boot it enough times to rescue her data. Finally i booted it in target mode and used disk utility on my PowerBook to erase the HD, in case we wanted to sell it on ebay to someone in need of spare parts.

Now i have heard about the clamp trick and the "shim trick" - and my god it runs again - HOWEVER the harddrive does not show anymore, have i killed the drivers on the original drive? And if so, how do i bring it back to life?

I can boot it from the CD, but the HD does not show up, neither when i run the installation-program from the cd, or when i open disk-utility to look for it. System Profiler doesn´t anything but the CD-drive under "ATA"

The drive doesn't show up if you boot the iBook in target disk mode attached to the PowerBook either now, I presume?

The easiest way to find out whether your drive is any good would be to take it out, put it in an external enclosure, and see what the PowerBook can do with it.

The only thing Disk Utility could have done would be to cause an already failing drive to take the final step. Drivers have nothing to do with it if System Profiler doesn't see it.

OK! thx for your reply. While i find it hard to believe i must have disconnected the HD when i took the iBook apart to do the shim trick. I guess i have to take it apart again...
