Has an official release date been given yet? What is the current speculation on Leopard's release? How easy will it be to upgrade from Tiger?

The upgrade will be easy. The rumor mill seems to think sometime in June around the release of the iPhone. Supposedly Leopard is going to allow for Touch Screen Technology, which will obviously be used on the iPhone. I just bought an Macbook and am thinking of returning it until Leopard is released.

Also, I live in Atlanta and my Apple Store is being renovated to open at the beginning of June around the iPhone launch. I think this renovation is happening in several of the original large apple stores so I would assume that apple will release leopard around this time.

I don't think the Leopard release will have much to do with the iPhone release. They could be at the same time, but more because both could be released on June 11 at WWDC, not because there is a huge reason for the two product releases to be directly linked.

Anyways, I'd expect Leopard to released by June 11 at the latest, but would not be surprised to see it released in May, along with some refreshed Macs around that time.

It could be something like this:

April 15: New Mac Pros
May: Leopard release
A few days later: New iMacs

Ok, cheers. I was just wondering because I'm probably getting a macbook rather soon, and I didn't want to buy it, then come online the next day and find out Leopard had been released
But if upgrading is easy, then no worries. thanks

Do you believe that alongside the Mac Pros or new iMacs, Mac Minis will be in there somehwere?

I thought that Eug's post was interesting, in that it is April (not even the 15th yet), and new Mac Pros have been released. Could this mean the new OSX is coming a little sooner, rather than later, than expected?

No idea really. Just guessing but...

Judging by recent history, Apple seems to like to release the pro towers before a major OS upgrade, and the iMacs after.

ie. This means that the pros have the choice of which OS to use, so that if they're in a workflow that REQUIRES 10.4 Tiger, then they can use it. It is interesting that Apple went out of its way to release the Mac Pros now: The chip that the octo-Mac Pros are using isn't actually even officially available. It's not available to most vendors until June.

OTOH, Apple likes to have consumer Macs ship with the new OS, which forces new buyers to have the latest OS. This p!sses some Mac IT guys off, but not that many, and the vast majority of end users would prefer to have the latest OS anyway, so they don't care if they can't use the older version.

I say this because this is exactly what happened with the Tiger release.

2.7 GHz Power Mac: April 27, 2005 <-- It can run 10.3.
OS X 10.4 Tiger: April 29, 2005
iMac G5 2.0: May 3, 2005 <-- It can't run 10.3 despite only being 1 week newer.

They did that with Panther as well. G5 Power Macs came out running Jaguar, then Panther was set free, then G5 iMacs came along running Panther.

Now they're saying October.

Get ready, get set, get Leopard
All these features and more are delivered to you in one universal, fully accessible, 64-bit operating system. Coming October 2007.

Sucks because I need a new computer for medical school and I can't wait til' 2007. Do you guys think it will be expensive to upgrade?

Went to an apple store in the UK, one of the staff told me it was coming in october now due to the release of the iPhone, but I think it's a mistake because some students will be looking for a new computer in the summer time, ready for going back to university/college/whatever.

It's not a mistake. They've already announced the October shipping date. And until it really ships, that could slip again. Then too, they might surprise everyone with an earlier release.

Either way, Tiger is a great system. Leopard will be ready when it's ready.

I think it would be a bigger mistake to not release new hardware such as Mac Minis, MacBooks, and iMacs when the school shopping season comes around.

I agree with chabig. Tiger is a stable system after the numerous updates. I'd rather wait for the 3rd party software companies to release their Leopard updates before i even think about getting a system with Leopard on it or upgrading my current system to Leopard.

I would rather have Apple release new hardware 'cuz I can always upgrade to Leopard later.
