Couldn't get my internal speakers to work this morning. Nothing happened when I tried adjusting the volume - the level indicator bars came up all lit, but there was the circle/slash icon below the bars, plus I noticed a red light shining from the output/headphone port. External speakers work fine, & respond to volume changes.

What's going on here?

Don't know if your question is still unanswered, but if so, this looks like a hardware problem. Basically, the MB is 'stuck' trying to output digital audio. You may have to send it in to Apple to be repaired.

Plug and unplug some headphones or external speakers, sounds like the sensor in the port is stuck/confused.

Thanks, mfbernstein - I found that same link the other day, so I'm taking it in this week for the sound card & that damn screen flicker. In the meantime, I have to revive my G4 iBook so I can carry on.
