Hey guys. I have a Titanium 1ghz with a superdrive that has been dead for the past year. This drive takes in a disc, clicks a few times, then spits it out. I am ready to replace it but I was wondering if anyone could suggest a great online store to buy one for the cheapest price. I want a new drive to ensure great working order and if it is not too much extra I wouldn't mind a DL DVDR. Thanks for the help

You could buy an external unit which would be cheaper, but you can always replace the internal unti too. OWC: Apple Mac G4 upgrades, Laptop Batteries, Memory, Drives is a good place to look.

I have the exact same problem, a dead superdrive, and it's maddening. Can anyone tell me how hard an install that's going to be? I've worked on my Mac and PC desktops before, but never a laptop and to be honest, I'm a little intimidated by the thought of opening up my MB Pro.

Thanks in advance.

Shouldn't your MB Pro be under warranty?

Well, if he bought it anytime between January-April 5th of Last year, then no, it's not.

The ifixit guides are generally the best. The MBP replacement isn't trivial, but it's certainly nowhere near as bad as, say a G3 iBook. The TiBook is even easier than the MBP.

(Don't do this with a machine that under warranty, you'll likely void it).

Just do things slowly, keep your screws organized, and make sure to avoid any static buildup.

Thanks for the responses! I'm unsure of my warranty date, though it's for sure sometime this April. Also, thanks for sharing the ifixit link, that's a great resource!

I'd strongly recommend a firewire external drive. My old 1.5ghz powerbook g4 superdrive got used a LOT for CD burning and DVD data burning and it blew up TWICE (thankfully under warranty). After that experience I realized my EXPENSIVE powerbook drive should be used only for away from home uses and loading software off DVDs. I bought a Plextor 712 based firewire external drive for something like $100 and have used that ever since.

Cheap investment and MUCH better write speeds.

Find that receipt and confirm your warranty. It is worth the trouble.
