My Powerbooks HD is failing and I would like to remove it and place it in an external case. This way I can plug it into my desktop and attempt to retrieve data off of it.

Is there a specific case I need due to the size of the drive being smaller than normal? I already have a 'normal' sized external disk in a case. Can I use this case for the powerbook's drive, or will I have problems with the cable size or other issues I don't know about?

Will I need to change the jumpers on the disk? I am vaguely familiar with how jumpers work, but I know I can find the info I need online.

Thanks for any advice.

No. You need a 2.5" drive case for a laptop drive. You shouldn't have to change jumpers (and laptop drives don't usually have them) since the drive is already set to master.

Thanks Steve!

I just called Melrose Mac - the local mac store - and they told me an enclosure is $99! I know I can get one from newegg for much cheaper, I was just surprised that they charge so much......and people probably buy them!

It looks like 90% of the cases are USB 2.0. Is firewire not a good choice for 2.5" drives?

One more question: My powerbooks HD is ATA?

ATA. And Firewire is fine. That's what my 2.5 case has.

An alternative (particularly if you're not planning on using the enclosure afterwards) is NewerTech's universal IDE/SATA-to-USB adapter. It's only about $25, and can connect all 2.5" and 3.5" IDE and SATA hard disks.

If you do get an enclosure, the big bonus of FireWire is that you can boot off of it (it's also somewhat faster).

Quite a bit faster, depending on exactly what you are doing, of course.

I highly recommend *against* using this product. I got one that failed and then a second one that failed taking down the control board of one of my drives with it. $25 for the crappy device and another $40 for a new control board for the drive out the window.
