Im going to upgrade my MacBook (C2D). I want to upgrade the hard drive, there are a few 200 GB ones and some 160's. Does anyone have any experience with the 4200 rpm 200 gb ones? Is the difference between 4200 and 5400 that noticable? There is also a good deal on ram. Anyone have any experience with Mushkin ram?
Thanks for the help. - David

Yes, there's a difference between 4200 and 5400. I would also do a 160GB 5400RPM. NewEgg has good prices. For RAM, Mushkin is good. Frys.com has a good deal on RAM right now... 1GB Kingston chips for $50 shipped.

The 4200 200GB is somewhat slower than the 5400RPM 160GB. On the other hand, it's at least as fast as the 100GB 5400RPM my MBP came with. Question is whether the extra 40GB are worth the extra $ and (IMO) slightly inferior performance.
The Fry's memory deal chipchen pointed out is quite a bargain.

I bought Mushkin RAM for my Core Duo Rev 1 MacBook. No issues. Slipped right in. I had heard a ton of stories about differing thicknesses of RAM and people having to work to slide them in...not me.
Mushkin was also very nice / available on the phone. They gave me an update / status when I called.

Upgrade the RAM for sure. I wouldn't get a 200 Gb HD because it is a pokey 4,200 RPM. You need something better than that. I would upgrade to a 5,400 RPM 160 Gb drive instead.

Get a 7200rpm drive and gain some performance. Then put your original HD in an external case for extra backup.
As for RAM, as long as it's a name brand (Cruical, Kingston), or it has a a lifetime warranty, then you're good.
