how do i reset my macbook battery?

my macbook wont charge and i heard that i can reset the batter but im not sure how. every time my macbook is unplugged from the power cable it shuts down and wont turn back on until i put the power cable in and from there i have to restart it.
white macbook, 2ghz, 1gb of ram, 80gb hd.
