In the past couple days, all of a sudden my fans are working like crazy. Still not annoyingly loud, and no funny noises, but it makes me wonder...

According to the 'fans' widget, they used to run consistenty at 16 and 17 (dont know what rpms that converts to). now they are consistently at 60-65, no matter what i am doing or not doing. Current temps (celsius i believe) are heatsink A 62*, heatsink B 58*, CPU 73*. I dont remember exactly, but i think the CPU used to be low 50s when the fan was 16-17. according to 'stats' widget, system CPU is running at around 38% -- I have open adium, firefox, and my few widgets.

Haven't installed any new programs or anything in the approp time frame. any ideas? should i be worried?

Are you sure there are no runaway process using up CPU cycles?

Check /Applications/Utilities/ActivityMonitor and sort by CPU.

I did that and didn't notice anything.

I shut it down for the whole night last night (had tried shutting it down for only a few hours at a time before), and things seem to be back to normal. (FYI, 17 on Fans widget is about 1797 rpms according to istat's new update). So who knows, but everything seems OK now.

what is a reasonable amount of time to leave it on? it generally just stays in sleep mode most of the time. should i actually shut down once a week? more often?
