I want to get a macbook as soon as I get paid at the end of April. The less I spend on it the better so I was thinking about getting the bottom of the range combo drive version.

This leaves me without a DVD burner which I don't really need as I can use the desktop at home networked for a backup solution.

I haven't used Mac OS for years so was wondering if there are any other drawbacks to not having the superdrive? For example, will I be able to create movies in iDVD? I realise I can't burn to DVD but would I be able to save the output as an ISO or something, export it to my (linux) desktop PC & burn it to DVD from there?

Yes, it can be done, although there is a second step (iDVD doesn't export directly to ISO, so you have to convert the iDVD disk image to ISO format with Disk Utility or the like).
