I recently bought a used iBook g4 800mhz about 3 weeks ago. Everything has worked pretty good on it so far except yesterday it kept starting to overheat which it already did every few days. Yesterday I would use it for about 20-30 minutes and then everything would just freeze up and I would have to reboot it after letting it recool. After doing that so many times I turned it back on after letting it cool down and it kept coming up with the question mark and finder icons flashing.
Yesterday I did a lot of research on it and found it was the hard drive. I didn't know if it was a mechanical problem or just an OS problem. When I bought the iBook it had OS X Tiger already on it. I only have the disc for OS X Jaguar from my imac g4 so I didn't want to try and downgrade by two OS's. I found out how to reset the pram and had the Jaguar cd in the drive trying to boot from it to atleast try and run disk utility from it. But for some reason it wouldn't boot. I was doing something wrong.
After reseting the pram a few times it suddenly worked!!! I was able to boot up!!! But then I waited about 10 seconds and the computer went to sleep. So I figured, "hmmm...i must have pressed something"...but then I pressed the keys to make it come back and it came back for about 2 seconds and went straight back into sleep. I'm trying to get it out of it but it keeps doing the same thing over and over!!!
This morning I woke up and powered up the ibook and once again the dreaded flashing question mark and finder icons. I called the apple store to see if they could help me. They told me to reset the PMU and I did. IT WORKED!!! And then once again the sleep mode.....but this time i couldn't get it out of sleep. I have to take the battery out to get it to turn off and when I turned it back on, it was just a black screen....nothing...I heard the "bong" but no screen. Now this seems like a logic board problem but how does it explain everything else???
PLEASE HELP!!!!!
