Since the first day I bought my Macbook Pro (which was approx 2 weeks ago so I am still under warranty) I've noticed that when I am typing, my 'E' key doesn't always get entered and I have to go back in my word/sentence and enter it in again. I've done some informal testing with various keys and it seems as if i have to press the 'E' key down a bit more than the others to get it registered by the system.

This is VERY annoying when I am trying to get something done in a hurry or am taking notes during a lecture.

Has this happened to anyone else? Will the Apple store do anything about it?

Thanks a lot.

I have had several laptops, and at least three keyboard problems in my long experience with Apple.

* The first one was with an iBook, which I ruthlessly spilled a full bottle of mountain dew into its keyboard. Surprisingly, soda on the mainboard doesn't cause much more than a completely unreliable keyboard.

* The second keyboard problem I had was with another iBook. Something foreign got under a key (W, I think), which caused the key to perform in the manner you describe. On that model I could remove the keyboard and pound it on a hard surface to clean it. On new laptops, that just isn't an option. Canned air just might help. Maybe.

* The third keyboard problem I had was with a Revision A MBP 17". Without warning, the Z key stopped functioning. Apple replaced the keyboard, no questions asked.

In all cases except for the last one, foreign objects caused some real odd behavior with my keyboard. I include the mountain dew case more as a joke, but even then, having something in the keyboard caused behavior that I didn't expect.

One thing I noticed when the third keyboard problem occurred is that the keys are very stiff for the first few weeks. It was that way when I bought the laptop, and that way again after Apple gave me a new keyboard. The keys do loosen up -- perhaps dependent on how frequently you type.

If it really bugs you, call Apple. They'll probably replace it.
