I've got a Macbook Pro - Mac OS version 10.4.8

I recently bought a HARD DRIVE 300GB 7200RPM SATA.

I, then bought the HDD Enclosure with USB 2.0 and once I put it all together, I connected it to my laptop and a message popped up saying that the drive cannot be detected. But I went into the disk utility and it was recognized.

Do I need to format it and if so, how?

If that's not the problem, does anyone know how to fix this?

The problem could well be Apple's underpowered USB ports. Try plugging the drive into a powered hub.
It is also possible that you need to format it. Go to Disk Utility, and select Format.

Most likely all you need to do is format the disk. Select the disk in the Disk Utility program and under "partition" you can format the disk.

What peeb said, always use powered drives when possible. Also note that in practice USB 2 is a poor method to transfer hard drive data, not performing up to listed speeds.

You should Repair Permissions, install all OS 10.4.9 updates, then Repair Permissions again before you reformat your new drive.

Just format it in Disk Utility. HFS+ if you're only going to use it on a Mac, FAT32 if you need to use it with Windows boxes too and are OK with a 4GB filesize limitation.

A 300GB drive means it's 3.5", which are not bus powered.

Please name one data transfer bus (suitable for a hard drive) that performs at the listed speed.

Wow. FAT32 file size regulation explains a lot of past problems. Thanks, never heard that before.

I think he means USB is worse than FW for not performing.

I know what he meant, but I still think what he said is misleading.

Sierra, if you read this, I tried to send you a PM but your Inbox is full. Just wanted to let you know my nit-picking with your posts lately isn't anything personal.

I have an inbox? I guess I better find it!

In any event, thank you, nitpicking by folks like us is nothing personal!

Edit: I found my inbox, and it says it is empty. Hmm...
