I agree, get Adium for AIM use. Personally I prefer to use the actual MSN client as opposed to Adium when it comes to chatting on MSN (don't ask why, it just seems to work a little better and I've used it for years), but Adium is excellent for AIM. The actual AIM client for Macs SUCKS!

A little more focused on utilitarian tools but still a reasonable starter list; all free too!

Since I also have a new MacBook coming tomorrow for my daughter, I have made my own list!
Safari Extender (to add the capability to import bookmarks)
Onyx (to clean up the computer occasionally)
NeoOffice (can import new Office and export easily in older formats)
Graphic Converter (to play with pictures)
FireFox
Stuffit (update the one from Apple and do the same for Adobe Reader)

But first and foremost, run Software Update and update OSX! Then run "repair disk permissions" and then run Software Update again! Repeat until the machine says that it is happy.

I haven't used mac for years so these applications might not be around but are well worth a search

Carbon Copy Cloner - makes a mirror of your whole hard disk (to USB Firewire drive) perfect for backups & you can boot from it too - excellent & free

Romeo an application that lets you do all kinds of cool things with a bluetooth phone - like control the cursor, keynote / powerpoint, itunes, vlc etc etc (also free)

Ignore the last two messages! NeoOffice is the Mac version of Open Office and Super Duper is better than Carbon Copy Cloner. sam

PS: Disc Utility (in Utilities subfolder of Applications) has a repair permissions function that fixes stupid problems created by installers written by inferior programmers (I am biased). If it is not run after every system update, some programs will not run properly.
