Hey guys, this is my first post here. I just purchased a used MBP the other day and I noticed that I have the whining that everyone seems to be talking about. I called apple and they said the applecare ran out on this laptop on March 25 so there is nothing I can do now. They said they will replace the MLB, but it will cost about 320 bucks. What is the newest fix for this...besides getting the board replaced? The MBP I bought is a 2.16Ghz, 1 GB ram, 256 graphics card, and 100 GB 7200 hard drive. I bought it for only 1300 so if I threw in another 320 I would still have a GREAT laptop for a decent price. Just curious as to what my options are. The guys at apple are pretty hard core in that they wont admit that the part is faulty, they just say the new board may or may not fix it. I think they know it will, they just dont want to have to replace it for free.

I dont think there are any alternative to this, you can check local Apple certified repair shops and see how much they charge to change the logic board...although they will charge you for labor and parts they'll have to order.

Do you think that the repair would be more at a local shop than through apple or cheaper? I would imagine that apple would be about as expensive as you can get.

Sometimes the date Apple has for their applecare warranty is not accurate. Check with the person you bought it from for when they actually purchased it.

How would I be able to prove that to them. I asked the guy that owned if before. He said that he bought it in MAY!!! The guy at apple told me it was purchased March 25th. The old owner has no way of proving it though. He said he no longer has any receipts, not to mention the fact that he lives in Florida and I live in Nebraska. He said that he bought it after school was out in May. What hope do I have of convincing apple of this. Oh, and apple tells me that this is a BTO computer....so you would think their date is right.

What are digits 3-5 of the serial number? If Apple's right about the date of purchase they're something like 612 or less.

Yeah, its 609, they must be right. Looks like I might be screwed. The guy that bought it must be mistaken. I just called apple again and said to the guy "if this is a faulty part, you should be required to fix it." He said, "well its not really faulty...we just revised it to work even better." Thats the biggest load I have ever heard. I dont really want to run quietmbp all the time, because that puts a 8-9% load on the cpu, and I have to drop it all the way down to 90 or 100 to get it to quiet down.

WOW!!! After reading around alot more I found several people talking about fixes. One was called quietmbp...but I didnt like how you have to run it as a program. Then I found Shhmbp. That startup item disabled the c4 sleep for the cpu and completely took care of the problem. I decided to run a test. I charged my mbp up to 100% and then let it set with Shhmbp running. Just sitting there it has been running for 1.5 hours and is only down to 64% battery. That is something I can live with. It is draining faster, but not too fast. Someone said you only really lose about 20 minutes because of it. Have any of you used this?
