Could be a particular sector of the hard drive needed in the bootup process is damaged (which might not be obvious when the machine is in target disk mode). You can try booting it in verbose mode to see where it's hanging (option-v on bootup).

That's not good. Looks like you'll have to reinstall. If you have something like a TechTool Pro boot CD, now would be a good time to run a bad blocks check on your disk. Alternatively, you can format the drive with Disk Utility (after booting from your OS CD) and make sure to zero the drive and map out the bad blocks before reinstalling.

ok...thanks for the response so far...

First off... i dont have a TechTool Pro boot CD
second... it isn't booting up from the Boot CD, it just goes to the grey screen with the apple and the spinner and stays there for as long as i keep it on.

Question...is it possible to use the imac via the target mood to format the drive of the ibook G4 ....oh ...one problem though... as of last weeek my Imac keeps spittin out any CD that i put in it , thing is, the computer system profiler indicates that the CD drive is installed... what could be the cause of that happening

hold option(alt) after the chime, and keep it held down until you come to the startup manager. if that works, then you should be able to boot off cds using that method.

or, you could put your imac in target disk mode, and boot off the imacs hard drive.

It's not booting from the CDROM even if you hold down the 'C' key on bootup?

If you want to format the iBook's drive from the iMac, just boot up the iBook holding down 'T' for Firewire Target disk mode, and hook it up to the iMac. You can then format it. You can also format from within the MacOS X installer, if you boot from a CD.
