Your machine has two memory slots, both filled with 256MB modules. To upgrade, you'll have to take one of the modules out, so take that into account when you're deciding how much memory to add.

iFixit has a good guide to upgrading the RAM yourself.
Crucial offers decent prices and a good warranty on their memory.
Your machine takes PC5300 DDR2 667 SO-DIMMS (200 pin) type memory, if you want to shop around.

Go to 2GB today; it's only $130.
If you go to 1GB today, you'll find yourself having to do the buy-and-sell dance again to get to 2GB in a year or two.

^^ Very much agreed.

Maxing at 2GB give you maximum flexibly to run memory hungry applications such as Parallels. Have you ever upgraded or installed RAM before?

It's really easy to install RAM on the MacBook, but keep in mind that the memory modules installed at the factory are in pretty tight -- and don't let that white goopy stuff on the stock memory modules scare you. Supposedly its lubrication installed at the factory.

Never can go wrong with Crucial RAM!

If your DDR2 modules aren't really tight in the slots, there's probably something wrong with them.
