I recently bought a G4 1 GHZ iBook cheaply, have upgraded the hd to 80 GB, and replaced the keyboard and top case (bad trackpad) with items from eBay. All seems to work ok now, except that the machine doesn't sleep when the lid is closed. I have other G3 iBooks who do sleep when closed, and I presume the G4 should too.

Somewhere I read a thread that discussed this problem, what the likely causes were, and what steps should be taken to fix it. All I can add is that the replaced top case came from a 800 MHz G4 iBook, or so I was told. If anyone can point me to a thead somewhere that discusses this, or start me off in the appropriate direction, I'd be obliged. Thanks for all responses!

I believe there's a small magnet in the upper case that is used to detect when the lid is closed. If it is missing or misaligned, the machine won't sleep. Here are pictures from the G3 version.

Excellent! I happen to have a small magnet, and when I apply it to the right side of the screen in the approximate position indicated by the G3 pix, the screen goes to sleep. So I must disassemble the top case again and verify the location of the magnet that should be there but may have journeyed about a bit with all of the maintenance going on. Many thanks! This should solve my G4's problem.

It did: Magnet had indeed shifted. All well again. Many thanks!
