This is getting too much. I'm loosing track of the number of times I've replaced memory in this stupid mac and this still happens. Currently running at around one panic every haf an hour. Is this STILL memory or does this arcane rubbish indicate another fault.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Well if it's happening every half an hour, disconnect some external peripherals and see if it stops.
I'd start with the scanner, then the bluetooth, then the tablet etc and keep going till they stop.

Are you using Apple memory or another brand? If you keep replacing the memory with Apple memory, then it would seem to be a problem other than the memory (unless it isn't seated properly). If you don't hear any suggestions here in a few days, I would call Apple if it is under warranty or search the Apple web site.
You might try a cleain install without any other drivers or external devices and see if that works. If you get no panics, add one external device and test it thouroughly before adding another. Do the same when adding external programs. If you get panics with a fresh OS X install, call Apple.

Oooooo-kaaaaaaaay
Ran Apple Hardware diagnosis - faulty memory chip. Opened up MAc and swapped chips over, ran test, no faults. Machine behaves for a whole afternoon, then back with the crashes. Hardware diagnostic - faulty memory chip again. Put chip in from spare Mac mini ran hardware diagnostics - no problems, back to OK running.
Called Apple support. Would I care to slap down a credit card just to talk to them it's only £35 sir, just in case its not our fault. I happened to mention at that point that there is some loud fizzing/humming from the machine whem I open the display that I assume is the converter board - it goes away after about 15 minutes. Also the superdrive is flakey and two discs in ten just make a high speed whining noise when inserted.
"OK sir in that case you'll need to slap down your credit card for £105 before we talk to you, just in case it's not our fault"
Or I can take it in by hand to the nearest Apple approved laptop center, in my case Bristol (1 hour each way and a 3 week wait on diagnosis)
I'm in central London on business on Tuesday I think I'll take it intoi the Apple Store and try and make it their problem then. Does anyone know the score with the store. Can I just hand it in there and if I do will I have to return to that store to collect it. I assume it will go to Ireland for repair.

You don't need to send it in just to replace memory. Just buy some memory that includes a warranty and install it. You won't void your Apple warranty doing so (if any), and it will be cheaper for you.

That's if I thought it was memory that was the problem.
Given that I replaced one chip, another now registers as faulty and then a third when I swap them around leaves me believe that it is the memory slot that is faulty not the chip.

Ahhh.. I thought you said you had it working. My fault.
I'm assuming you are outside of Apple's warranty period too?
Have you tried the "memtest" tool? It is the industry standard memory testing app, it might provide more accurate results than Apple's hardware diagnostic CD. If would be interesting to see if any errors are consistent. If they aren't, I would assume that you might have a bad logic board or something.

outside the 90 days free support but inside the years warrnanty. It's just that Apple don't make it easy to return laptops outside the 90 days!
