Hi, My Macbook Pro recently went a bit belly up on me, I decided to restore it to new using the install discs. In my haste I re partitioned the drive and wiped everything off it, then realised I lost the restore discs, but luckily I have an imac too, so I thought not to worry, I'll just the discs that came with that.....

Now I thought job done, popped in the restore disc no problem, boots from the cd drive, but when I select install I get the following message "ALERT, The software cannot be installed on this computer". Now I'm guessing that means the discs that came with my imac are locked to that? Am I right? If so is there a way round this (I really don't want to have buy another set of discs), or is this something more sinister?

Hope someone out there can help!
Cheers
Nick

You are right with your guess, nothing sinister, just that the System Install disks that come OEM with a Mac are designed to work on that Mac series and none other. Especially if your iMac is a PPC chip! The Intel and PPC installation disks are muy different. You really have two choices: find the original disks(!) or buy 'em.
