Hey all,

So I'm looking to replace my Superdrive with another HD, akin to these folks [link] - I'm based in the UK and can't find someone who can do a similar thing for me.

Does anyone know what components I'd need? Is this too much for me to manage (I've dis-assembled and re-assembled countless TiBooks and other Apple portables)?

At the moment my movies and videos have to be stored externally to make way for work on my MacBook C2D 2.0, I'd like at least 320gb of storage and thought this'd be a viable option.

Buy one of the media bay hard drive carriers for a Dell, rip off the plastic casing, and it should fit into the optical bay in a MacBook.

Well, the difficulty is in the cabling. The flex cables and pin connectors used between the hard drive and optical drive are completely different. That bay in the link has a circuit board that converts from one connector type to the other. Not sure how you could make that on your own without a purchase. I thought I saw a link of some company offering this service, though I don't know which machines they support.

Hmm, the cabling/circuitry was the bit that I've no experience with, can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks for the help so far!

I SO wish Apple spec'd this as an option. I would ditch the optical drive for an extra HD in a heartbeat.

Me too, hence the thread.. I've used my optical drive twice in the last 4 months!

Everyone I know uses dongles to pass files around and everything else (for me) is online?!

The media bay drive adapter for Dell laptops includes the cabling/circuitry to go from the 2.5" ATA hard drive standard to the slim optical drive standard. Rip off the plastic exterior and it should fit inside the MacBook.

You can buy just a circuit board that converts between the two cheaper, but I don't know that it would fit inside an optical drive bay.
