Hi, I just received a used MBP, the first revision that came with an intel chip (that's all I currently know about the machine). I was pondering on formatting it with windows home server (alpha) and attaching my spare usb drives on it as a NAS.

The machine's battery seems corroded and given the previous owner's respect from hardware, I don't think it would last long so I'll propably keep it on power and throw that away.

Finally I was thinking of dumping the hard drive, since I suspect it's taken a lot of beatings. Should I buy an external one (SATA or PATA ?) with a converter (is it standard or apple variation ? ) or just a smaller laptop sized ? Or even bettter: will it boot from usb ? I also suppose I'll have to use bootcamp to get this going, does that come on a bootable CD or do I have to run it in OSX ?

I have no clue on using macs so please be gentle. Thx for all the fish in advance.

You can probably have the battery replaced by Apple for free.

- Also, you can do all serving tasks with OS X … you don't have to install Windows to do that.
- You don't need an `Apple adapter' for anything, Macs use standard PC hardware. ProBooks use SATA 2.5" harddrives.
- They will boot from USB.
- If you want to run Windows, then you have to use Boot Camp to partition and prepare the harddrive; it also contains the necessary drivers.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Oreo, thx,

I don't think the battery falls in the recall programme. The entire device has been misused a lot, especially being left under the sun. The plastic on the underside feels weak. It would be dishonest to turn that in .

I wan't windows HS so that I can : a) finally switch down the noisy desktop that does that now, b) enjoy much better search, c) enjoy domain management for the rest of my home, d) enjoy previous versions+backup. I also have very little experience with macs and little time to set it up.
Ok so SATA, what I was thinking about is using a desktop HD with a 2.5 adapter and leaving the disk outside of the chassis. Will bootcamp prepare external drives ?

If you're new to Macs, give OSX a spin before you format it for windows. You'll probably like it...

You need 0 time to set it up if OS X has already been installed. Just activate Windows sharing, Printer Sharing (if you wish to do so) and create the user accounts you need, just like you would on a Windows machine. The whole procedure takes about 1-2 minutes (honestly).

It would be a pity if you didn't give OS X a spin when you have the chance to.

It's not advisable to use such a set up as a server (or as any sort of computer). You cannot install Windows XP on external harddrives, so the answer is no.

People, people, I don't want just baseline functionality. As I said I want to be able to perform decent search, sync our profiles, push updates for the OS and avast (antivirus) and have incremental backups over 'previous versions'.

Thx for the fish. I think I'll find my way from here on.

Keep in mind that without a battery the laptop will only run at 1Ghz... no one seems to know why Apple created this limitation.

You might want to keep a battery as a UPS … (It works for me a few times for the occasional brown-out …)

This is a firmware limitation.
