I have the latest 12" PowerBook. In recent months the fan has gotten noisy. The machine is out of warranty so I am not keen on servicing it as I plan to replace it when 10.5 comes out. The fan in question is the one under the keyboard, presumably cooling the processor/motherboard.

I am considering taking on the keyboard and removing the fan altogether. This doesn't seem like the best idea - for cooling reasons, but does anyone have another idea?

Thanks!

Well if you don't want to replace the fan yourelf, you're pretty much stuck with a noisy fan. Don't remove it, or you'll overheat the machine and possibly damage components. It's there for a reason. iFixit.com has the parts if you decide to do it yourself. I replaced a noisy fan in my 15" PB and it wasn't too much trouble, but I know 12"ers are more difficult.

The fan is an integrated part of the heatsink assembly in the 12", so you would probably have to replace the whole assembly. If it's that bothersome, it's not too difficult to take off the top case and see if anything is interfering with the fan. Just use the ifixit guide.
