hi ...
i bought a new 120GB WD hdd for my old 12" G4 iBook and i'm planning to replace the disk myself. so what is the best way to backup all my data, replace the hdd and then restore the os and all applications?
should i use Disk Utility to create an image or any other third-party tool?

thanks in advance ...
phil

Disk Utility is easy and free. How are you going to physically connect the new drive and the old? Do you have a third drive, or an enclosure for the new drive, or another Mac for target mode?

i got an enclosure or another mac - what would be better to use?
i thought the easiest way would be to use the external USB2.0 enclosure ... !?

It isn't really question of "better", there are several ways to do it, each has its advantages in terms of speed or ease of set up, but they all get the job done. What do you mean about "the external USB2.0 enclosure"? Is your new drive in an external USB box?

no, the new hdd is a normal IDE drive - but i thought about putting it in the external enclosure for cloning the current data from the old hdd to the new one.

That's better!
You are good to go with Disk Utility, New Disk Image, Read/Write, no compression.
Otherwise, this 170 ton press will get a 3.5" drive into your 'Book...

What do you mean "wouldn't boot"? What is happening?

Press option when you boot. Select your new internal disk. Will it boot properly now?

Boot from the OS X install DVD. From the menu select Disk Utility. Repair the your new disk. Does it report any errors? Repair permissions. Will it boot properly now?

Press cmd-s while you boot. What does it say when it stops to boot?

Boot from your startup CD, run Disk Utility --> Repair Disk.
You may need to reinstall the System, it is possible that something did not transfer over correctly.

sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AudioIPCDriver.kext
