So my iBook recently died on me, it quit turning on for some reason about month ago. Recently I charged up the battery and tried firing it up, and I was able to get it into Target Disk Mode and transfer my data to my new MBP.

Now, last night I decided to figure out what was going on with this iBook... call me sentimental, but I've had this thing since my Sophomore year of University... and I just don't want to let it go. It got me through school, and has since my first job been my source of income... its been good to me.

I tried doing a clean format off the recovery CDs, and from a fresh 10.4 DVD, both go along fine until there is less than a minute left, and then quit due to errors. It doesn't specify what error, it just gives me the option to shut down or restart.

After that I tried the hardware test CD, it went through everything, and got stuck on the memory test. The error I get is:

2 MEM/1/4 : DIMM1/J7

So.... my question is, what does this mean? I'm hoping its just that the RAM in the DIMM is bad and I just have to replace it. But if that's the onboard memory (the 256 that is soldered onto the mother board, or if its something else... I won't be able to resuscitate my iBook.

Basically what I'm saying is.... HELP!? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

It's most likely the DIMM. J7 is the connector reference location. Try a new DIMM.

It looks like you have two ram chips in your machine - have you tried removing them one at a time to try to isolate the problem?

The iBooks only have one ram slot, but if you have 256 on-board then just pull it out and run the Hardware test again.

Ah, that was my confusion - his sig says 768mb, which I thought was two chips.
