I got a brand spankin new Macbook yesterday for graduation. (Basic white one, 2.0ghz C2D, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, etc...)

So, I plugged it in the light was red, all is well. I went to sleep, woke up, and it is now six hours later and I looked at he light and it is now green on the power charger. Is it really already fully charged and ok to use? Or should I wait a little longer? I was just surprised to see a green light so fast (only 6 hours). Usually when I buy things with lithium ion batteries you have to charge them for 8 or 10 or 12 hours initially.

Also, do ya'll have any tips for someone new to the whole Apple world? I've been on a PC my whole life and I'm very excited for this laptop. I just want to make sure I do everything right, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a million,

-Kyle

if i were you, id say go for it. the batteries don't come empty from the factory. just, remember about once a month to completely cycle the battery (unplug and use until it goes into sleep on its own), then charge full. this will help it retain its longevity.

as to introducing yourself to apple, it's not as huge a leap as you think. they make "osx for dummies books" if you really want one. otherwise, you will learn in a few days. one thing is, dont leave all of your programs running by accident. make sure you shut some down and not just minimize. that 1g of ram will be used quickly.

Thanks for the reply.

That is good to know that the batteries aren't "empty" from the factory (that makes sense why it would charge faster). Plus, mine was bought at the store, but shipped to my house. iLife is supposed to come with it, but I didn't get a disk so I am assuming they already installed it for me (before they shipped it)? *Bought it from Microcenter*

I'm not going to buy a book because there is a wealth of information on the web and reading forums helps ease the learning curve considerably.

Once again, thanks for the advice. I'd be glad to hear from other people, too.

Is it bad to leave it on the charger for longer than it needs? Like if it is on the charger for another 6 hours after the green light is on (while the laptop is shut off) does that hurt it or make no difference?

Thanks,

-Kyle

It's not a great idea to leave it permanently plugged in and never discharge it, but it's not a problem to leave it plugged in for a few days.

Leave it on for as long as you want, just run the battery down every once in a while. Congrats on graduating and the MacBook!

yes, iLife is on it. there should be icons in your dock for garageband, imovie, idvd, etc... if not, go to the finder and click applications. it will be in there.

It shouldn't take you too long to learn how to use a mac as compared to a PC. It took me just a few days, and when I learned how, it was when I was about 12. It shouldn't be a problem for you. The hardest part for me was getting down the key commands, I just had to remember to hit apple-q to close out the programs. Enjoy your new mac!

The x3100 isn't much better than the GMA 950 performance wise. Although the MacBooks isn't that bad, I am spanning to a 20 inch HD display and it works just fine.
