So i've read a lot of blog posts and forum threads over the net that like to bash the Apple Genius bar and I figured since people generally only like post and rant when they have a bad experience, i thought i would post a good one.

My powerbook would not turn on, which i posted about previously to find some help. The short of it is, my powerbook wouldn't turn on or charge but my power adapter still glowed amber whenever it was plugged in. I suspected my power adapter since it never blinked green whenever i inserted it, but most of the power adapters that people complain about going bad don't glow at all. So i was then thinking it was the DC-in or logic board. I took it to the genius bar up in the Cleveland, OH area where I was met by a really nice guy who seemed to be pretty intelligent. He thought the DC-in was the problem, especially when he grabbed a spare battery and the machine booted, but the battery wouldn't charge. I asked him politely to try another adapter, and rather than be put-off by my idea he said sure and when he put in a new adapter, it blinked green and started charging. He then tested which part of the adapter was malfunctioning and I walked out w/ a new adapter for $80 that fixed my problem, rather than sending it in for service.

The guy had a full schedule, he was working by himself, was multi-tasking another appointment along with me and had another one coming in in 10 min. He could have easily said, it doesn't work I'll send it in for you for $XXX. But he spent time with me, talked to me like i was knowledgeable, and now my still quality working 12" can serve me until the new thin and light macbook pro comes out some day.

take care.
-Matt

It takes a genius to try another adapter? Wow.

Just a quick question, if a Powerbook is two years old and you don't have AppleCare, can you still take it into the store to have them look at it?

Yeah, i wasn't sure about that either, but they only charge you if they have to send it out for repair. My PB is close to 4 years old (12" Rev A) and i didn't have apple care on it, and they still entertained me. Just make sure you set up an apt. in advance (online) before you go in, because they are usually pretty booked up.
