That's not a hard order to fill. The base model costs $1099, and less if you're an educator or university student. Check out the The Apple Store website. Also, look at the "Special Deals" section. Stock fluctuates but you can often find previous models and refurbs for well under $1,000.

I just bought a MacBook about a week ago after using Windows for years and I am thoroughly enjoying it so far. I immediately noticed the attention given to visual detail that makes the experience more enjoyable.

I wanted to point out that any answer will depend on you plans for the computer. I myself do mostly web-browsing, document creation (Pages/Word), presentations, and I'm hoping to play around with GarageBand more and more. I bought the lowest end MacBook (with educator discount, free printer (with rebate), and free iPod nano (with rebate), and it has worked very well for me so far.

I'd say that if you're not planning on much gaming or heavy visual work (like with photos, 3D rendering, and the like), get the MacBook.

With an educational discount you can even add extra RAM or HD space and still come under that price point. And it'll handle photos just fine unless you're working with hundreds of images at a time or with RAW files.

You may also be able to find a model on Amazon, maybe already upgraded in a sweet spot. Then you'll save on sales tax, which you'd pay at the Apple Store.
