So I do a lot of Second Life.

I bought a new LED MBP for the faster graphics performance of the NVIDIA 8600M GT.

But guess what? Second Life's graphics performance is about 2x faster running in Windows Vista on my MBP, as opposed to running in OS X.

Now, what is the explanation for this? Somehow I don't think it is Second Life's fault. Somehow I think that the current drivers that Apple has for this graphics card are not taking full advantage. Or else, they are using a graphics card that is geared specifically towards DirectX 10 and are just intending to build in better drivers for it later.

What's the deal, Apple?

That's weird, doesn't SL specifically recommend an nvidia card which the new MBP now has? Then again, I've heard the Mac client for SL itself s generally not as good and as well maintained as the windows version. I use SL on the first generation MBP and it runs just fine--or at least as well as it does in Windows XP--don't have Vista.

This is most likely Apple/NVIDIA's fault for writing poor drivers for that card. If you look at Ars Technica's review of the 17" MBP, you'll see that they found that the new graphics card usually performed worse than the previous one.

This may have been fixed in Leopard, I'm not sure, but everyone that has noticed this problem should do their best to send a message to Apple complaining about the poor performance, as it is completely a software issue. The other possibility, of course, is that the OS X version of Second Life is poorly written.

This is basically a cross-post from his thread here http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/...vista-vs-os-x/ (although this thread's creation precedes the other, this has had fewer responses).
