I just picked up a 17" HD resolution matte MBP at the local Apple store (Charlotte, NC). There is a light band a few mm thick along the botttom edge that is visible at all times regardless of screen brightness or color background. I figure this is light leakage but my venerable 15 inch TiBook has nothing of the sort, so I am going back to the Apple Store to compare the display model again and see what Apple will do. It also did not seem significantly brighter than my TiBook (3.5 years old). This laptop is one day old, so I hope they will exchange it if they agree this is an LCD anomaly and not within normal specs.

Last week, I replaced my 17inch macbook pro with a high res 17inch macbook pro. I just noticed this today, actually, after cleaning the bezel with a cleaning cloth. I thought it was my fault, but to double check, I jumped onto the forums... and I found this thread. I'll be going back to the apple store to bring this up with them.

My 17" display has this too. The one at the Apple store had it, but not nearly as pronounced. I just noticed after months of using my Macbook that even on my white Macbook, it has it too. Seems harder to notice on the Macbook, but it has it too. It's not terribly bad and much better than the 15" LED screens I've seen so I think I'm just keeping this one. Let me know what you guys find. I've returned 2 15" LED MBP's so far and I want to be done returning machines.

Oi... They replaced the notebook with no complaints. The new one still has the same issue.
Where to go from here? I need a 17inch for work.... And this is all I have to work with. Do you think apple will recall these?
Edit: Its interesting.... it really looks like a shadow... I looked at the 17inch MBP's that were on the floor at the 5th ave store and I saw this issue in all of them. None of them were high res MBP's either.

Not to double post... but are there any other people out there with the 17inch high res that are experiencing this?
Apple has always known to have amazing displays... and this just frustrates me.

Every matte LCD display I've ever seen has this small light band at the bottom, even the Cinema Displays. On some it's less noticable but it's there. I have seen glossy displays that don't seem to have this. Every 17" MBP including the new HD ones I've seen have this. You won't find anything better by exchanging it. It is less noticable on glossy displays, but I've yet to see any store with the glossy 17" HD display to verify this.

Every laptop I've seen has that band. It's normal.

It's just reminding you the CCFL is down there and you should have bought an LED-backlit 15"
