I am in the process of selling my 1.33Ghz Powerbook, and have been looking at the base 2.0Ghz Macbook model. With my educational discount, I can get it for $1149CAD. Staples in Canada has been blowing out their old stock of their Macbooks, and is selling the 1.83Ghz Macbook for $999CAD. I have a spare 1Gb of RAM from my imac upgrade, so the RAM difference isn't important. I am a little concerned about the 2Mb versus 4Mb cache. Will there be much of a noticeable difference?

And I guess the BIG question is... Will these base line Macbooks be much better(read faster) than my 12" 1.33Ghz powerbook with 1.25Gb of RAM?? Of should I keep what I've got??

I went from a 1.33Ghz G4 iBook (12") to a 1st Gen MacBook (1.83Ghz CD) and the speed difference was VERY noticeable. (of course, so was the size difference...that's why I now carry around a 12" x60s (TP))

As far as cache size differences...personally, I'd go with the 2.0Ghz with 4MB of cache. I do some folding (F@H DC project) and I can tell you that 2.0GHz C2D's fold noticably faster than my AMD 3.0Ghz dual core system. And the only real difference is the cache. Don't know how that translates to the real world tasks you do...but it is enough for me to take notice.

BTW, the MacBook's keyboard is THE best laptop keyboard I've ever used. (and I've owned several Thinkpads)

hey i just gave my IBM T30 tp to my dad once i upgraded to my macbook and i agree about the keyboard! i think my key strokes has gone up per minute, just because of the design.

The cache is an important part of architecture and should be taken into account. But with 2gb of ram your only concerns would really be hdd size, superdrive....can you live without them?

The HD size isn't an issue, and my iMac has a superdrive... I decided after both your comments to go with the 2.0Ghz. And I get a free ipod nano out of it! Not a bad deal... Now I just have to get rid of the powerbook! Cheers, and thank for the feedback.
